Who it is for

Spas that sit idle in winter

If you do not use the hot tub between November and March, running the heater all winter costs more than a closing and an opening.

Seasonal and vacant properties

A spa at a property that will be empty cannot be left running. A power outage in a cold snap can freeze an unattended tub solid within a day or two.

Spas waiting on a repair

If the heater or pump is down and the fix is not happening before winter, winterizing protects the plumbing until it can be repaired.

What happens on the visit

1
Shut down and drain

We power down the equipment, drain the spa completely, and remove the residual water that a drain alone leaves in the footwell and seats.

2
Blow out the plumbing

We blow out the accessible plumbing lines and jets, drain the pumps and heater, and loosen or remove the appropriate winterization components so trapped water has somewhere to go.

3
Protect and inspect

We apply the winterization treatment and freeze protection where appropriate, replace the cover, and do a final inspection so the spa is ready to sit through winter.

Why a drained hot tub can still freeze

Pulling the drain plug on a hot tub removes most of the water, but the plumbing lines, jet bodies, pump housings, and heater manifold all hold water that does not drain by gravity. In a Hunterdon County winter that trapped water freezes, expands, and cracks the fitting, the pump wet end, or the heater. The leak shows up in the spring when you refill.

Winterizing properly means getting the water out of those places on purpose. TrueBlue blows out the accessible plumbing and jets with air, drains the pumps and heater, and loosens or removes the unions and plugs the manufacturer specifies so any remaining water can expand without breaking anything. The exact procedure varies by spa manufacturer and configuration, and we follow the appropriate procedure for your spa.

Winterize, or keep it running?

Many New Jersey hot tub owners never close their spa. A covered, well-insulated hot tub holds heat well, and a soak on a cold night is the best thing a hot tub does. If you plan to use it, keeping it running on recurring Spa Care is usually the better choice, and we service spas all winter long.

Winterizing makes sense when the spa will sit unused for months, when the property will be vacant, or when a repair is pending. The one thing to avoid is the middle ground: a full spa with the power off. That is the setup that freezes.

Winterization questions

How much does hot tub winterization cost?

Spa Closing starts at $299 for a standard residential hot tub up to 500 gallons, including the winterization treatment. Swim spas are quoted separately.

When should I winterize my hot tub?

Before the first hard freeze. In Hunterdon County that usually means late October through November. Closing earlier is fine if you are done using the spa for the year.

Can I just drain it and turn off the power?

Draining alone leaves water in the plumbing, jets, pumps, and heater, and that is what freezes and cracks. A proper closing blows the lines out and drains the equipment so there is nothing left to expand.

Should I keep my hot tub running instead?

If you will use it, yes. A covered hot tub runs fine through a New Jersey winter and we provide spa care year-round. Winterize when the spa will sit unused or the property will be vacant.

Do you reopen it in the spring?

Yes. Our Spa Opening service reverses the closing: equipment recommissioned, refilled, started, tested, and the water balanced with startup chemicals included.

Do I need to be home?

No. As long as we can reach the spa and the equipment bay, the closing can be completed while you are out, and you receive service documentation afterward.
