Who it is for
If your hot tub was drained and winterized in the fall, an opening brings everything back online in the right order and catches freeze damage before it becomes a leak.
A spa at a property you only use part of the year can be opened for your arrival and closed again when you leave.
If you inherited a winterized hot tub with a house, an opening is the safest way to find out what works before you fill it and flip the breaker.
What happens on the visit
We remove the seasonal protections, reinstall the drain plugs and any components that were removed for winter, inspect the accessible plumbing and equipment, and install or inspect the filter.
We refill the spa from your water supply, prime the pumps, and start circulation, then test each pump and the jets and verify the heater is heating.
We balance the fresh water and add the startup sanitizer and chemicals so the spa is ready to use once it comes up to temperature.
Opening a winterized hot tub the right way
A winterized spa has had its water removed, its plumbing blown out, and often its pump unions and heater drain plugs loosened or removed. Opening it means putting all of that back in the correct order before any water goes in. Fill a spa with a drain plug missing or a union loose and you find out when the equipment bay floods. Start a pump dry and you can damage the seal in seconds.
TrueBlue opens hot tubs in a set sequence: protections off, plugs and equipment reinstalled, plumbing and equipment inspected, filter in, refill, prime, circulation on, and only then the pumps, jets, and heater are tested. If we find freeze damage or a failed component, we tell you before continuing.
When to open your hot tub
Unlike a swimming pool, a hot tub can be opened at any point in the year since the heater does the work. Most owners in Hunterdon County open in March or April so the spa is ready for cool spring evenings, but if you winterized for a trip or a renovation, we can open whenever you are ready.
If you would rather skip the closing and opening cycle altogether, recurring Spa Care keeps your hot tub running year-round, and many New Jersey owners find a hot tub in January is the best use of the thing.
Replacement filters and any repairs the inspection turns up are additional. Pricing applies to standard residential hot tubs up to 500 gallons; swim spas are quoted separately.
Hot Tub Opening questions
What does a hot tub opening cost?
Spa Opening starts at $299 for a standard residential hot tub up to 500 gallons, with the startup chemicals included. Replacement filters and any repairs found during the opening are additional.
When should I open my hot tub?
Whenever you want to use it. Most owners open in early spring, but a hot tub does not depend on warm weather, so an opening can happen any time of year.
How long until the spa is ready to use?
The opening itself takes a couple of hours. Heating a full spa from a cold fill to temperature takes several more hours, often overnight, depending on the heater and the ambient temperature.
Do I need a new filter at opening?
Not always. We install or inspect the filter as part of the opening. If the cartridge is worn or torn we can supply a replacement, billed in addition to the service.
What if you find freeze damage?
We stop and tell you what we found before doing anything further. TrueBlue focuses on maintenance and water care, so major heater, pump, control, or plumbing repairs are quoted separately or referred out.
Can you open a hot tub I did not have you close?
Yes. We open spas that were winterized by anyone, including the previous homeowner. We inspect the equipment as we go and let you know what we find.
